Selena Gomez' "Good For You" feat. A$AP Rocky - Single Review

Coming off the unexpected yet well deserved success of her previous single "The Heart Wants What It Wants", former Disney princess Selena Gomez is ready to debut a more mature sound and style. By releasing the dark and seductive "Good For You" featuring A$AP Rocky, the lead effort off her second solo album and her first with Interscope Records, the 22-year-old is showing the world an intriguing new persona.

Gomez has a sugary sweet past she desperately wants to shed. With pop-leaning chart hits including "Who Says" and "Love You like A Love Song" under her belt, the artist experienced a slight reinvention when she announced a solo career in 2012. She continues the growth with her new single, co-written by former Semi Precious Weapons leader Justin Tranter.

"Good For You", produced by frequent collaborator Rock Mafia, is a simple, midtempo sultry pop release with influences from the R&B genre, a sense of Rihanna will immediately fall over the listener. Thanks to Tranter, the mature nature of the songwriting becomes the highlight of the new release, as does Gomez' ever-improving vocal abilities. However, there seems to be something missing from the overall finished product. Coming off one of her biggest successes, the new single does not satisfy all expectations.

The direction the artist is taking her music career is commendable, it's far from the generic bubblegum pop stylings of her beginning, but a radio-friendly, uplifting track would have worked wonders following her depressing ballad directed at Justin Bieber. "I'm gonna wear that dress you like, skintight, do my hair up rear real nice, and syncopate my skin to your heart breathing," she croons before an added verse from A$AP Rocky comes through. Though unnecessary, his contribution gives the release a little more room to dominate radio airwaves.

It's not surprising to hear a slightly more risque offering from Gomez, she's a young adult now, but the track could have been more effective at showcasing her maturity. "Good For You" is a strong release, deserving of a successful run, it's just not one that needs to be played on constant rotation. Pieces of the new single are excellent, but when it all comes together it sounds a tad bit forced and uninspiring. Buzz is already swarming, but the need for a second single is already felt.
