Online beauty retailer Escentual has analysed sales figures to reveal the top ten male scents for Christmas 2019, and retro fragrances released in the '90s and noughties dominate the list. Classic choices such as Issey Miyake L'eau d'Issey Homme, released in 1994, and Jean Paul Gautier Le Male from 1995 are among the top ten, however the more recently released Dior Sauvage is set to reign supreme. Johnny Depp, 46, been the face of the Dior cologne for four years now and sales of the aftershave in the run-up to Christmas have already taken on an unassailable lead, outselling the closest rival by over two to one. Dior Sauvage, which was first released in 2015, is predicted to make around £34.5m this Christmas with around 554,400 bottles sold thus far. Christmas is the busiest time of year for perfume sales, and the men's fragrance market is expected to hit £260m for just October to December – this is up 4% on last year but is still less than half the women's perfume market (£550m). Dior Sauvage is £59.40 for 50ml EDP (Escentual.com) The nation's favourite aftershave for 2019 is Dior Sauvage which was first launched in 2015 and is a re-launch of the old 1966 Eau Sauvage classic. Dior Sauvage, which officially launched back in 2015, is a very different scent to the original however and contains fresh top notes of Calabrian bergamot and mandarin, Tonka bean, vanilla absolute from Papua New Guinea and Sri Lankan sandalwood. 2. Paco Rabanne 1 Million EDT 100ml Spray £57.80 (Escentual.com) In second place for the UK's favourite is last year's winner Paco Rabanne 1 Million. The 2008 cologne in the bold gold ingot bottle has been top of the charts for some time but has just been toppled, however it is still predicted to sell around £12.5m, with 261,400 bottles sold. Paco Rabanne 1 Million is a mix of blood orange, grapefruit top notes, cinnamon, mint, and rose at the heart, and leather, white wood, patchouli and amber in the base. Chanel Bleu de Chanel EDP spray 50ml £76 (Chanel.com) In third place is the classic fragrance Chanel Bleu de Chanel, which launched in 2010. It's a woody aromatic fragrance for men which features labdanum, nutmeg, ginger, sandalwood, patchouli, mint, jasmine, grapefruit, vetiver, incense, cedar and pink pepper. Sales of Chanel Bleu de Chanel this Christmas are expected to be around £11.6m, with around 180,300 bottles sold. Chanel Bleu de Chanel which launched in 2010 is a classic fragrance and is expected to be the third most popular this Christmas 4. Creed Aventus spray 50ml is £185 (Creed Fragrances) In fourth place this Christmas is 2010's hit Creed Aventus which is thought will sell £10.25m over the festive season, amounting to 48,400 bottles. The fragrance was launched in 2010 and has top notes of blackcurrant, bergamot, apple and pineapple, heart notes of rose, dry birch, Moroccan jasmine and patchouli, and a base of oak moss, musk ambergris and vanilla. HUGO BOSS BOSS Bottled EDT Spray 50ml for £41.65 (Escentual.com) Fifth most popular fragrance is 1998's Boss by Hugo Boss, which is expected to sell £8.25m with 190,200 bottles sold. Paco Rabanne Invictus EDT Spray 50ml £42.05 (Escentual.com) The sixth most popular fragrance for Christmas is Paco Rabanne Invictus and it's predicted to have sold £5.42m from October to December, around 108,700 bottles. Housed in a bottle shaped like a trophy, which first hit shelves in 2013, the scent contains a marine accord, grapefruit zest and bay leaf, as well as Gaiac wood, ambergris and patchouli. Diesel Only The Brave Eau de Toilette Spray 50ml £39.95 (Escentual.com) In seventh place is 2009's Diesel Only The Brave which is predicted to sell £5.3m, around 145,100 bottles. Diesel Only The Brave, which was first released in 2009, has top notes of lemon and mandarin, and heart notes of cedar and violet. This cologne first created in 1995 has fresh mint, lavender and bergamot in its top notes, a heart of cinnamon, cumin and orange blossom, the base contains vanilla, tonka bean, sandalwood and cedarwood. Issey Miyake L'eau d'Issey Homme EDT Spray 75ml is £37.40 (Escentual.com) Ninth favourite is 1994's Issey Miyake L'eau d'Issey Homme. Sales are predicted to be around £4.38m this festive season, around 113,600 bottles sold. The cologne was introduced ten years ago and combines bergamot, lemon and tarragon, middle notes of nutmeg and water lily, and a base of tobacco, sandalwood, cedar, vetiver and musk. Issey Miyake L'eau d'Issey Homme came in ninth place, which is impressive seeing as it is the oldest aftershave out of the ten - having been released in 1994 10. Dolce & Gabbana K By Dolce&Gabbana EDT Spray 50ml £46.75 (Escentual.com) In tenth place is Dolce & Gabbana K £4.2m with 76,000 bottles predicted to sell. It contains blood orange, pressed Sicilian lemon and juniper berries. The heart has pimento essence combined with sage, geranium and lavandin, while the base combines cedarwood, vetiver and patchouli. We predict that this will be Dior Sauvage's first year as men's Christmas number one. For the last three years, Paco Rabanne 1 Million has taken the top spot, but it looks like Sauvage will steal it this year.' |
