Pop Darling Kim Petras Puts Her Heart on Ice for "All I Do Is Cry" Single Release

German pop darling Kim Petras has been serving up a string of singles to her die-hard fans recently -- "Got Your Number", "Blow It All", "Broken", "Sweet Spot". Will they all eventually be a part of an upcoming, highly-anticipated debut album? Only time will tell.

However, those recent tracks were missing a certain element that made previous efforts like "Heart to Break" and her Halloween-themed Turn Off the Lights, Vol. 1 extended play come off as absolute perfection. Her latest release rights all those wrongs.

"All I Do Is Cry" is Petra's fifth single release in five weeks. The moody pop effort finds the artist reveling in her heartache, giving listeners a reason to cry on the dance floor, as trap-inspired beats support a fragile yet convincing vocal performance.

As Petras finds herself picking up the pieces of a broken relationship, she's distraught, unable to envision a future without her lover by her side. And while she mourns what could have been, she is also consumed by the past. "Wish that I could say that you're dead to me, what's it gonna take to feel alive again?, I feel like I'm breaking, I keep medicating, I just can't believe that it's over now," she tragically sings.

It's rare and unfortunate to hear Petras in such a vulnerable state of being, a departure from her bright and colorful persona and brand of pop. "All I Do Is Cry" throws the young artist into unexpected territory, both artistically and personally. While the supporting production keeps the energy at an enjoyable level, it's mellow enough to highlight a tone of depression and loss.

When compared to its predecessors, "All I Do Is Cry" simply checks more boxes. There's evident emotion within the performance, more lyrical substance, and an artistic direction that's not being tapped into as much on radio right now. We've expected Petras to keep us guessing, serve up something unique... she's done exactly that here.

Petras will kick off the North American leg of her upcoming tour with a stop in Nashville on June 11.
