Over the last six months, online secondhand platforms Thredup, Poshmark and StockX have filed for megawatt IPOs, reaching valuations of $1.3 billion, $3.8 billion and $7.5 billion, respectively. A growing tide of startups want in on the action, using white label technology, digital passports and a combination of rental and resale to differentiate themselves.

The tough task is deciphering which offerings will stick. The online resale market is very fragmented and dynamic, with new players entering in search of growth based on shifting consumer trends, and established players raising additional funding through external investment or IPOs, notes Sarah Willersdorf, global head of luxury at Boston Consulting Group. Winners and losers will emerge over the next three to five years during which period the secondhand sector, currently valued at $30-40 billion worldwide, is expected to grow by 15-20 per cent.

Luxury brands should not sit on the sidelines, says Willersdorf. "Brands should explore options such as selling secondhand themselves, developing their own resale platforms, instituting buy-back programmes, and partnering with existing resale platforms to leverage outside expertise," she says. Boston Consulting Group's research suggests that 62 per cent of consumers would buy more from fashion brands that partner with secondhand players. "The bottom line for brands is that the preowned market is here to stay," says Willersdorf.

Fashion CEOs would prefer to participate with some control over the representation of their brands, says Sarah Smith, a partner at Bain Capital Ventures, which has invested in resale startup Archive. "What's most surprising to many is that resale can drive even greater customer loyalty for brands, rather than cannibalising sales."

Why haven't more luxury brands invested in resale? Andy Ruben, CEO of white label resale platform Trove, which powers resale for sustainability-conscious brands including Patagonia and Eileen Fisher, says this comes down to the perceived risk, which is quickly diminishing. "Luxury brands are good at strategy but they don't want to be first. Right now, they're watching and learning. In the next couple of years, we'll witness a luxury player doing it right."

The rise of brand-integrated resale

Integration is one option. "Keeping secondhand platforms, brands and retailers in siloes was driving inefficiencies on all sides," says Stephanie Crespin, founder and CEO of Reflaunt, one of many startups white labelling their resale technology. Reflaunt's modulable features include broadcasting resale listings to up to 24 global marketplaces to promote quick sell-through, offering customers store credit instead of cash, and digitising physical purchases for luxury brands that have been slower to adopt e-commerce through an in-store resale drop-off scheme. It's part of LVMH's La Maison des Startups and its clients include Balenciaga and Cos.

New Inclusive Sizes Address Lack of Sustainable Clothing Options in the Fashion Industry - Yahoo Finance

Posted: 12 Apr 2021 03:00 AM PDT

WINNIPEG, MB, April 12, 2021 /CNW/ - Anne Mulaire is excited to launch inclusive sizing in all of their clothing lines, which has been highly anticipated by women across Canada who are looking for sustainable clothing options, ranging from XS - 6X. The launch of their Better Fit for a Better World campaign also aims to challenge the fashion industry and continue the conversation on the significant lack of good-quality clothing in larger sizes—an obstacle that has remained in place for women throughout the history of fashion.

The launch is an important one for the Anne Mulaire team as they have done extensive research on body types and fit, including a focus group with women where they learned what their needs and challenges are when looking for inclusive sizes. Through their findings they discovered that although there are some options available, there is still a large gap to be filled by the fashion industry.

"Every woman deserves to feel confident and beautiful in the clothing that they put on," says Andréanne Dandeneau, owner of Anne Mulaire. "We believe that truly sustainable fashion requires everyone's participation and right now the fashion industry is leaving people behind because of their size. We think it's time to shift that narrative and we're starting with inclusive sizing in all of our clothing lines."

The launch of these new sizes will feature an array of products, including leggings made from bamboo fabric, blouses, sweaters, vests, cropped tops and more—with new designs in the works.

For more information and to view the new inclusive sizes, please visit annemulaire.ca or visit in-store at 421 Mulvey Avenue, Unit 303. The hashtag #BetterFitBetterWorld can also be used to continue the conversation and learn more about the campaign.

The Marquette Golden Eagles (5-7, 2-4 in BIG EAST) split their weekend series with the Georgetown Hoyas (4-7, 3-3 in BIG EAST) winning 15-9 Friday, but losing 20-10 Sunday afternoon.

It was a close early on, with four ties in the first 15 minutes of the game. Senior attacker Caroline Stellar scored four of her five goals on the day in the first half to keep the Golden Eagles in it. With those five goals, Stellar eclipsed the 30-goal mark for the season. She now has 33 goals on the year with four games left to go. Stellar is the seventh player in program history to have 30 goals or more in a season.

Redshirt senior attacker Megan Menzuber had only one goal on the afternoon, but with that, she eclipsed the 30-goal mark for the second year in a row.

The first half ended with Marquette only trailing the Hoyas by two, as it was 9-7 at halftime. However, it would not remain that close in the second half.

Georgetown put on a dominating half of play, outscoring MU 11-3 in the second half. The Hoyas were led by first-year attacker Kylie Hazen, who scored five goals. Hazen was supported by graduate student attacker Michaela Bruno, who had three goals and an assist, and by first-year attacker Katie Goldsmith, who had three goals off the bench.

It was a rough day in net for both Marquette netminders, as senior Sophia Leva allowed 16 goals on 26 shots on goal. She was replaced by redshirt senior Julianna Horning, who only made one save on five shots on goal.

Georgetown sophomore goalie Emily Gaven had a solid day in net, with nine saves on 19 shots on goal.

The Golden Eagles will travel back to Milwaukee to host the University of Denver Pioneers at Valley Fields April 16 at 3 p.m. Central Standard Time.

Tommy Hilfiger Fashion Business School Established at Elmira College - WWD

Posted: 11 Apr 2021 09:05 PM PDT

Tommy Hilfiger and his siblings Andy and Betsy have partnered with Elmira College to establish the Tommy Hilfiger Fashion Business School, which will combine business education with real-world fashion industry experience. It will be part of its bachelor's degree in business administration.

The Hilfiger siblings grew up in Elmira, N.Y., where Tommy Hilfiger opened his first local store in 1969 called People's Place. Hilfiger and his family have maintained their connection to the community through their work and philanthropy.

"The partnership with Elmira College reflects much more than my personal connection to the area," said Tommy Hilfiger, founder and principal designer of Tommy Hilfiger Corp., which generated $9.2 billion in global retail sales in 2019. "The fashion industry runs on a never-ending influx of new talent, and this program will be instrumental in shaping aspiring designers and entrepreneurs through firsthand knowledge and experience in the business."

He noted that Elmira College has a national reputation for experiential learning, both within and outside the classroom, "and this program will open up exciting career opportunities for students as well as boost the industry's talent pool." He expects to invite his network of industry contacts to lecture at the school.

"I want to give back to my hometown, Elmira, N.Y., and inspire students who are interested in pursuing studies in a career of fashion," added Hilfiger. "My family and I have a long-standing relationship with Elmira College and we felt this would be a great addition to the business program. The opening of the Tommy Hilfiger Fashion Business School is an exciting endeavor for my family and me."

Scheduled to start in fall 2021, the program will offer a concentration and minor in fashion marketing and fashion merchandising, both new to the curriculum. Students within the fashion merchandising program will study the merchandising needs of a marketplace through research, design, data collection and analysis. The fashion marketing track will train students on how to research, collect and analyze data and develop marketing and communications strategies to launch brands in the marketplace.

"Elmira College's business administration program has had a long relationship with the Hilfiger family," said Betsy Hilfiger, the Hilfiger family liaison to Elmira College, where she received her RN degree. "We are looking forward to even greater collaboration and bringing real fashion industry expertise to the classroom through internship experiences with us and other fashion houses."

"As a career field, the fashion industry provides many opportunities for talented professionals in both North America and emerging markets worldwide, and we saw this field as a key area for our focus on experiential learning and real-world career skills," said Dr. Alison M. Wolfe, Elmira College business and economics chair. She noted that the fashion industry is one of the world's largest customer-facing sectors with revenues estimated at $1.5 trillion a year.

Andy Hilfiger, vice president, partnership-marketing at Authentic Brands Group, added, "Guest lectures and internships through the Tommy Hilfiger Fashion Business School will connect students with icons in the fashion industry. That interaction gives students an opportunity not available in a classroom setting. It's a chance to learn about not only the daily operations of the fashion industry, but all the history, the people and the deep connections it has to other industries, such as the music industry."

The creation of programs such as the Tommy Hilfiger Fashion Business School is part of the college's strategic plan to introduce industry-level knowledge to the next generation while preserving the essence of a liberal arts education. Elmira College will hire faculty when deemed appropriate for the courses.

"We know we need to adjust to the changing needs of a global workplace, as well as student expectations of a comprehensive education experience," said Dr. Charles Lindsay, president of Elmira College. "Tomorrow's workforce will be more complex than ever before. Programs and partnerships, like the Tommy Hilfiger Fashion Business School, enable us to bridge a liberal arts education with professional studies and pave a path to success for our students. We are grateful to have the support of the Hilfiger family, and look forward to welcoming our first students to the program in the fall of 2021."

Founded in 1855, Elmira College is a private, residential, liberal arts college in Elmira offering 35-plus majors, an honors program, 17 academic societies and 18 Division III varsity teams. It is located in the Southern Finger Lakes Region of New York.

Hilfiger, who didn't attend college, said he started his People's Place business right out of high school "and all the college students used to shop there."

As previously reported, when he received the President's Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Fashion Institute of Technology in 2019, Hilfiger told the graduates the best part of success cannot be defined by fame or money. "It is the opportunity to give back to the world and do more for the causes that are dear to your heart that will matter the most," he said.

Unlike other award ceremonies this year, the BAFTAs gave us some much-welcomed physical red carpet style despite much of the ceremony taking place virtually (reminisce here over the best BAFTA dresses of all time). While the star-studded list of nominees remained via video link, celebrities were invited to present the awards in person at the Royal Albert Hall, including actress Priyanka Chopra who wore two chic looks for the evening. The Duke of Cambridge, Prince William, was also set to present at the awards but cancelled his appearance in the wake of his grandfather Prince Philip's death.

"In light of the Duke of Edinburgh's passing, the Duke of Cambridge will no longer be part of BAFTA programming this weekend," the BAFTAs explained in a statement, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "Our thoughts are with the royal family, to whom we offer our deepest sympathy at this time." As president of the BAFTA organisation since 2010, Prince William has been regularly attending the BAFTAs for many years alongside his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge.

The 2021 BAFTA ceremony was broadcast over two nights to accommodate virtual appearances from guests in accordance with Covid-19 guidelines. In lieu of the pre-BAFTA party that celebrates the past year of film, nominees were sent an elegant celebratory box to enjoy at home, including a specially curated list of 50 BAFTA-winning and nominated films (view the list for yourself here to watch and celebrate the film industry).

Here we chart all the BAFTA 2021 fashion from the presenters on the physical red carpet and the nominees who attended remotely. (Then, for our definitive edit of the night's best dressed, head here.)
