Prime Minister Stephen Harper must've been born with a shamrock up his ass. Ever since Michael Ignatieff's Liberals decided that they wanted to pull the plug on their little coalition with the Conservatives, said Conservatives have gone further and further up in the polls. They now lead the Grits by as much as ten points.
It no longer matters that Harper's responsible for creating the largest deficit in my country's history in response to an economic crisis it took him three months to recognize was even occurring. It doesn't even matter that he pissed away a perfectly good surplus on electioneering nonsense. Raising the age of consent to sixteen while trying to change the law to allow children as young as fourteen to be sentenced to life in prison? Forgotten.
Nobody's even taking much notice of his Minister of Natural Resources' criminal fundraising practices. In a more innocent time, people would actually be beheaded for using federal agencies to send out political solicitations. But everyone in the country is so fascinated by the spectacular meltdown of the Liberal Party that we're letting that shit slide. It's almost as if we're so fascinated with seeing Ignatieff jumping to his death that we're willing to reward Harper for not being suicidal.
People are are actually starting to question who's actually leading the Grits in their fratricidal self-immolation. The Liberals are now the party of South Vietnamese monks, setting themselves alight to make a point that nobody wants to understand.
Last week, in the ring of ridings around Toronto, the Liberals tried to score points for what they claim are the slow pace and partisan bias of infrastructure stimulus spending. Leader Michael Ignatieff convened a news conference in front of a vacant field and bemoaned how it would today be under construction were is not for Tory foot-dragging and game-playing. Unfortunately, it was the wrong field. The municipality in which it was located had no intention of beginning construction on a new park there until at least next year.Even though he makes Dick Cheney look like Tommy Lee, Stephen Harper is winning for no other reason than he isn't Michael Ignatieff. Even Yo Yo Ma agrees!
I'd be singing, too.
